Japanese Hip Hop can be traced back to Tokyo as far back as the early 80s. In 1983, (months before it opened in New York), Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style premiered in Tokyo. With a tour bus packed with nearly the entire cast of the film, Wild Style embarked on a Japanese road trip that sparked Hip Hop culture in the land of the rising sun.
Japanese Hip Hop pioneers Crazy A and DJ Krush both acknowledged Wild Style's impact on Japan and refer to the film as the impetus behind their success and popularity.
With funky elements taken from the original 1983 Japanese Wild Style poster, Sedgwick and Cedar's Planet Rock Tokyo shirt honors Japan's foray into Hip Hop culture via the film that started it all.
